Traditional FM Radio on the iPhone

Date:2014/7/28 9:24:00 Hits:
Out of the box, your iPhone does not include functionality to play FM radio stations directly. To listen to your favorite radio stations on the device, you need to download an app from the App Store. There are many options available. For example, radio networks like Clear Channel and PBS -- and even some local radio stations -- have their own apps, making it possible to listen to live streams online.

Services

Several apps exist on the App Store that enable you to connect to a variety of local stations. Radio network Clear Channel offers the iHeartRadio app, which includes about 1,500 stations. While some of these are online-only stations, many are simulcasts of local radio broadcasts from stations the company owns. Another app like iHeartRadio is TuneIn Radio, which offers 70,000 radio stations that are both online-only and simulcasts of actual FM broadcasts.

Radio Station Apps

Some individual radio stations offer their own apps: check on the station's website for more information, or search for the station's call letters within the iTunes App Store. WIYY 97.9 "98 Rock" in Baltimore is one station that offers its own app with live streaming capabilities. Another station with its own app is KTRO "Mega 97.1" in Guadaloupe, California. That station plays a classic adult contemporary format.

Public Radio

Public radio listeners can also find apps to tune into their favorite programs and stations. Public Radio Player is one option, and includes links to more than 500 public radio stations around the country. National Public Radio also has an app called NPR News, which offers on-demand access to its news programming and most popular shows. Finally, several individual stations have their own apps, including WUNC in North Carolina, California's KCRW, Rhode Island Public Radio, and Vermont Public Radio.

FM-Radio Like Services

There are other services that might host your favorite FM radio station's online stream, or a format close to it. Services like Shoutcast and Live365 have a limited selection of live streams of radio stations, but these apps primarily offer online radio stations. Other services, like the radio stations included in iTunes's "Radio" section, may offer online radio stations that are similar to your favorite FM station's format.

Pandora

If listening to the live stream of your favorite radio station isn't that important to you, but you want to hear similar music to what that station plays, Pandora might be an worthwhile option. When you create the radio station, enter the names of songs and artists that you like hearing on your favorite FM station. Over time, Pandora will create a station with songs and artists you like based on your feedback.
