How to Connect a Dipole Antenna to a FM Radio

Date:2014/8/26 16:53:31 Hits:
A dipole antenna is one of the simplest of antennas, yet is a solid performer. Dipole antennas are inexpensive and simple to produce, and are often included with FM radio receivers. Even if your receiver doesn't come equipped with a dipole antenna, they're readily available at electronics retailers and online. Hookup is easy and you'll enjoy much improved FM reception.

Things You'll Need

    * 300-ohm to 75-ohm matching transformer (optional)

Connecting to a 300-Ohm Input

1.Access the back of your FM radio receiver and locate the external antenna input. If the input is a circular jack, labeled "antenna 75 ohm," go to Section 2. If the antenna input says "antenna 300 ohm," go to the next step.

2.Loosen the screw terminals with a screwdriver, turning them to the left until they're loose enough to slide the u-shaped tabs on the antenna cable under them. Slide one tab under each screw and then tighten the screws by turning them to the left.

3.Position the antenna so the top part of the "T" shape is parallel to the floor. The antenna is somewhat directional now and if you position it with the arms facing different directions you'll receive stations with greater or weaker signal strength and clarity. Position the antenna so that it works best for the stations you want to receiver and then tack it to the wall with push pins or small nails. There are small holes in the ends of the antenna arms for this purpose.

Connecting to a 75-Ohm Input

4.Loosen the screw terminals on your transformer so that there's room for the u-shaped tabs of the antenna line to slip underneath. Slide the tabs underneath and tighten the screws to hold them in place.

5.Push the jack of the transformer onto the 75-ohm antenna connector on the back of your receiver.

6.Position the antenna so the top part of the "T" shape is parallel to the floor.
