How to Troubleshoot My RF Modulator

Date:2016/3/10 18:39:51 Hits:

So you're having some trouble with your RF Modulator. RF modulators are devices that make it easier to connect certain components like DVD players and video game systems to televisions that only have coaxial inputs. Many of these devices only have RCA-style audio/video outputs (round color-coded ports), and the modulator takes the signal, converts it and sends it to the television via coaxial wire, which has a round screw end with a small pin coming out of the middle.

•Ensure the RF modulator is receiving power. In order to convert the signal, the RF modulator must have its own separate power source, and generally comes with its own AC adapter or plug that needs to be plugged into a power outlet. In addition, many RF modulators have a power light on the front or side; check to see if this light is on. If so, unplug the modulator and then plug it back in 60 seconds later; often this power cycle will fix many internal problems.

•Ensure your RF modulator and television are set to the correct channels. Like many VCRs in the old days, RF modulators will broadcast on channel 3 or 4, and most have a switch to move it back and forth in case one or the other is receiving interference. Set the RF modulator to 3 or 4, then set the television to the same channel.

•Check the output from your device. Trace the wires back from your RF modulator to your DVD player (or whatever device you have connected to the RF modulator). Ensure that all three ends are inserted snugly, and that they are plugged in according to their color-coding (yellow, red and white). Repeat for the connections to the RF modulator.

•Unscrew the coaxial wire from the RF modulator's output port. Check to make sure the pin sticking out of the center of the wire is straight and not bent. Carefully insert the pin into the pin-sized hole in the output port of the RF modulator, then screw it tightly to secure it. Repeat for the back of your television.

•Replace the RF modulator if all of the above steps fail to solve the problem.
